Techi Talkie - Fictional Magazine

I always take time to look through interesting magazines, especially ones dealing with technology.

Magazines, like WIRED, always capture my interest and get me thinking of what the future may look like.

I decided that I wanted to attempt and make a fictional magazine focusing on interesting pieces of technology.

I'm a big fan of Will Ferrell and Michio Kaku! These have to be my two favorite magazine covers.

Let's talk tech

I wanted to focus on just one story. I remembered that a new version of the Nokia 3310 phone was released a few years back, and was excited to learn more about it. The phone is legendary due to how resilient it is. You could drop a brick on the original and it would break. I wanted to make the New Nokia 3310 the main story of my fictional magazine. I quickly started my research.

Left is the original design, and right is the new design. Quite sleek if you ask me.

I was pleased to find out that the newer Nokia phones were coming in a multitude of colors. Don't get me wrong, I like the old navy blue of the original, but being able to choose a color helps the phone feel more personal.

A LED color screen was implemented, with a Mico-USB port for connectivity. Let's not forget the camera, can't have a phone in today's world without some sort of camera in it.

Say cheese!

After researching the website for this new phone, my next mission was to come up with an eye-catching cover. I wanted to play with the indestructible quality of the phone. So I first messed with the idea of showing the new Nokia 3310 being smacked with a brick. As amusing as I thought that was, it didn't come together the way I had hoped. I later watched a hydraulic press squish some object on YouTube, and found that to be pretty cathartic for some reason. It then hit me that an image of a hydraulic press trying it's best to destroy a NEW Nokia 3310 would work much better.

Here are some mockups I created to try and visualize what my cover would look like. I really loved the hydraulic press idea. It really drives the point home.

After getting the concept and all the necessary info down. I quickly came up with a quirky name "Techie Talkie", and started putting things together. My first focus was, of course, the cover of the magazine.

I wanted the phone and the hydraulic press to be front and center. I added some cracks in the background to give a feeling of pressure. I also chose the background to be dark with binary code, to make it look, well, tech like. I also decided to put a small post-it-note tag on the cover, I mean, who doesn't want a bionic eye?

Here's what I came up with for the cover. That hydraulic press just can't handle that phone!

Now I want to focus on designing the pages for the main story. I wanted to have a cover page for this since I've seen that in main tech magazines where they dedicate a whole page to some sort of design focusing on the main topic. The course, I tasked my self by designing at least one page talking about the new phone.

Send it off to the presses!

Took me a few days, but I really like what I ended up with. Below are the final products for my fictional magazine "Techie Talkie".
