Destructoid Astro Headset Contest

A few years ago, while reading a news article on Destructoid.com, I came across a post for a contest to win a pair of Astro A30 headphones. It was an art contest and the only stipulation was that all entries had to feature the robot mascot of the Destructoid website. The winner would receive a pair of the Astro A30 headphones with their art on them. I really wanted the headphones and to challenge my self, so I decided to take on this challenge!

Here are the current logo and banner for the website. You can see the mascot on the right next to the logo.

Making waves

After some brainstorming, I knew I wanted to work on the idea of a soundwave.

After practicing generating some sound waves in photoshop, I had figured out how I would add the Destructoid Robot into this idea.

I have a weird fascination with sound waves.

My idea was simple, I would use the Destructoid mascot and have the soundwaves interacting with it in some way or form. With that idea in mind, I started sketching!

My initial sketch. Looks kind of funny looking back at it.

My first sketches had me recreating the head of the mascot and having the soundwaves come through the robot's ears. Something felt wrong though. I felt the robot was taking up a lot of room in the middle. So I decided to tweak the design further.

Here is my final design. I really love the prominent soundwave in the middle.

Outcome

Unfortunately, I was not selected as the first place winner. I received second place. As disappointed as I was, I was pretty content still that I was in the top 3. I later decided that I couldn't have my art on a pair of real Astro A30 headphones, I'll just use my skills to do it digitally.

Below is how the headphones would've looked like with my art on it.
