Maiden Killer - Independent Film Posters
One day, a coworker and I were discussing our favorite films. He later mentioned to me that he was working on his independent film, and that once complete would like to have posters created to help promote it.
I quickly offered my services, and plans were later created to create a total of four posters.
Noir is cool
The movie was called "Maiden Killer". A murder mystery movie set in the 1950s. After getting a good understanding of the movie's premise, I started searching online for inspiration. I came across noir films from the 1940s. I was amazed at how a feeling of mystery could be created from black and white film and good lighting. I decided to run with this idea in mind and start putting things together.
I was inspired by the Film Noir movie spotlight and movies like Sin City that had a similar style with its
washed-out color palate and theme.
Rain, mist, dark alleys, nightlife, are all used in the noir styled of films. I played around with these aspects and tried my best to add them to the poster designs. I also noticed in more recent noir films that sometimes a singular color would be emphasized. Since this is a murder mystery film, I figured red would be the best color to focus on.
Here's a screengrab of a noir film. See how rain and a little fog is used to give this feeling of demise,
sadness and death?
Three gals? Four Posters!
After about 3 weeks of work, we have the final product. I used red to emphasize the murder aspect of the film while using an angeled sans-serif typeface similar to that of old 1950s signs and movie titles.
