Nintendo 64 Classic Console

I'm a huge gamer. So when Nintendo released the Nintendo Entertainment System Classic Edition and the Super Nintendo Classic Edition, I waited for an announcement for a classic edition of their third console, the Nintendo 64. Alas, it was never created, yet I was always curious as to how the Nintendo 64 classic would look like and what features it would have.

I took it upon my self to create my own box art for this fictional system.

I was sure that Nintendo would release a mini Nintendo 64 console. Here are the miniature versions of the previous two consoles.

90s design

When Nintendo designed the previous two box arts, they heavily relied on the designs used on the original releases of the consoles from the mid-80s and early 90s. The Nintendo 64 was released in 1996, and the original box art shows it. I decided to follow in their footsteps and designs something close to what the original box art had.

The old artwork for the box shows a lot of neat effects on the console in the front and many characters and games in the back. Brings back a lot of memories.

One of the first things I wanted to do was get the Nintendo 64 Controller symbol down. If you look closely at the top of the box for the NES and SNES Classic, you'll see a white silhouetted symbol for their respective controllers. The Nintendo 64 has a very unique controller, and to make this box art even slightly believable I would need to nail the design for the controller symbol.

Here is what I came up with. The 3 pronged design is very faithfully recreated along with button placement.

The typeface is the same one used on the official NES and SNES classics.

Next were the features and games. It was easy to find out which games should be on the system, but what else should the console have that would make people want to run and get this system? What is an old-school problem we all dealt with back in the day? WIRES!

Controller wires were always an issue, so perhaps wireless controllers could be a major selling point for this fictional miniature Nintendo 64.

Two wireless controllers packed in for multiplayer action, and a nice little preview of games on the right instead of the neat design shown in the original.

Another preview of the games in the back of the box art, along with the game rating stamp.

It's ALIVE!... I wish...

Now Nintendo may never release an actual miniature Nintendo 64. However, thanks to my work, we can at least know how one may have looked like. Speculation is fun sometimes, especially when it's about something you enjoy. Below are all faces of the box art displayed on a 3D box created using Cinema 4D.
